Reconstruction from brain activity
Reconstruction from brain activity
** PLEASE READ THE CAPTION TO UNDERSTAND THIS VIDEO ** The left clip is a segment of a Hollywood movie trailer that the subject viewed while in the magnet. The right clip shows the reconstruction of this segment from brain activity measured using fMRI. The procedure is as follows: [1] Record brain activity while the subject watches several hours of movie trailers. [2] Build dictionaries (ie, regression models) that translate between the shapes, edges and motion in the movies and measured brain activity. A separate dictionary is constructed for each of several thousand points at which brain activity was measured. (For experts: The real advance of this study was the construction of a movie-to-brain activity encoding model that accurately predicts brain activity evoked by arbitrary novel movies.) [3] Record brain activity to a new set of movie trailers that will be used to test the quality of the dictionaries and reconstructions. [4] Build a random library of ~18000000 seconds (5000 hours) of video downloaded at random from YouTube. (Note these videos have no overlap with the movies that subjects saw in the magnet). Put each of these clips through the dictionaries to generate predictions of brain activity. Select the 100 clips whose predicted activity is most similar to the observed brain activity. Average these clips together. This is the reconstruction. For a related video see: www.youtube.com For the paper (Nishimoto et al., 2011, Current Biology) go to:dx.doi.org For ...

The Orange Bird mascot has returned in a big way to the Sunshine Tree Terrace at the Magic Kingdom (and on merch). At Disney's Animal Kingdom, Earth Day (and the park's anniversary) was celebrated with special booths and activities. At Innoventions, the former House of the Future has reopened as the Vision House, with an emphasis on green (sustainable) technologies. All that, plus we bring you more pictures of Fantasyland, including a peek over the wall at the coming Casey Jr. splash zone and from the Seven Dwarfs Mine Coaster, taken from Dumbo. Electricians protest at Gratte Brothers construction site at Cannon Street - 2 Nov 2011.mp4
Electricians protest at Gratte Brothers construction site at Cannon Street - 2 Nov 2011.mp4
Electricians picket construction sites and power stations by Simon Basketter The battle to stop building bosses tearing up contracts and slashing wages saw pickets in London, Manchester, Newcastle and Nottinghamshire this morning, Wednesday. Workers picketed the contractor Spie Matthew Hall at the Ratcliffe-on-Soar power station in Nottinghamshire. No electrician is working on site today. The demonstration caused lengthy traffic tailbacks on the A453 that runs past the site. In Manchester, workers blocked the entrance at the Carrington paper mill site for the second week in a row. Electricians are escalating their protests across Britain -- despite intimidation. Some workers have been told they will be sacked if they protest. Socialist Worker has also been told of a number of cases of workers being moved from sites to try and disrupt workers' organisation. Up to 300 workers and supporters protested at the Gratte Brothers construction site at Cannon Street in London. The company is one of seven that have launched an onslaught on electricians' terms and conditions. They plan to rip up workers' national agreement and cut wages by a third. The other contractors are Bailey Building Services, Balfour Beatty Engineering Services, Tommy Clarke, Crown House Technologies, SES and Spie Matthew Hall. One electrician told Socialist Worker, "They are pushing through new contracts that will push wages down by up to 35 percent. They want to deskill the trade. I won't be able to work as ...

Baku White City
Baku White City
Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, being the oldest centre of the world oil industry, has within a short period of time become a large modern city, and has established its own inimitable appearance. With its ambition of attracting big business and foreign investment, this dynamically developing capital city is fast becoming a very desirable city for working and living; for leisure and entertainment. The Black City appeared at the end of 19th century in the eastern part of Baku; a piece of urban heritage from the first oil boom and the result of urban development from a distant past. It has played a major role in the oil industry for more than 100 years, performing activities of refining, storage and transportation of "black gold". At the current time, a unique opportunity for the restoration of the Black City area has arisen on an industrial site, which is located directly at the centre of Baku Bay and the to the east of the city centre. A site with an area of 221ha and surrounded by a dynamically developing city infrastructure has a chance to be reborn for a new purpose, and has become one of the most attractive opportunities for investments. In respect of the Decree from September 28th, 2006 by His Excellency ILHAM ALIYEV, The President of the Azerbaijan Republic, entitled "Comprehensive action plan for improving the ecological conditions in the Azerbaijan Republic during 2006 -- 2010" steps were undertaken for the removal of industrial uses to the edge of the city ...

KT Tape: Tennis Elbow
KT Tape: Tennis Elbow
Tennis Elbow is the common name describing the condition Lateral Epicondylitis, or inflammation of the outside portion of the elbow resulting in soreness and tenderness. Though, recent research has shown that the condition is not as much inflammatory as it is degenerative (microscopic injury to the tendon). The elbow is the obvious juncture between the shoulder (the rest of the body for that matter) and the hand. Though often unappreciated or recognized, the elbow and especially the ligaments and nerves that pass through, are put under constant pressure and demand during even the most simple of activities. Research shows the condition is not entirely inflammatory in nature and has many root causes and presentations. Typically the condition affects individuals greater than 40 years of age with a history of repetitive activity of the forearm leading to aggravation of the tendons. Most often the condition shows up in the dominant arm and will take extended periods of time to heal due to the low blood flow to the area. The cause of tennis elbow is not precisely known, and is very likely due to many contributing extrinsic (activity) and intrinsic (anatomical and nutritional) factors. Some, but not all, of the following factors can lead to symptoms of tennis elbow and pain at the lateral epicondyle: • Poor general conditioning • Improper form while training • Bad technique during sport or work (repetitive) • Worn or poor fitting equipment • Gripping with unnecessary force ...

MMDTs ), also referred to as Moscow-City[1][2] (Russian: Москва-Сити, Moskva Siti) is a commercial district of central Moscow, Russia. Located near the Third Ring Road in Presnensky District of western Moscow, the Moscow-City area is currently under development. The Moscow IBC is expected to become the first zone in Russia to combine business activity, living space and entertainment in one single development[3]. The Moscow government first conceived the project in 1992[4]. An estimated 250000 - 300000 people will be working, living, or visiting the complex at any given time.[3] The construction of Moscow IBC is taking place on the Presnenskaya embankment of the Moscow River approximately 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) west of Red Square, and just east of the Third Ring Road. The project occupies an area of 60 hectares,[3] the territory chosen being the only area in central Moscow that can accommodate such a project[citation needed]. Before construction began, the area represented an old stone quarry where most of the buildings were old factories and industrial complexes that had been closed or abandoned. The total cost of the project is estimated at $12 billion[4].

Plowshare Program - American Atomic Bomb Tests For Industrial Applications
Plowshare Program - American Atomic Bomb Tests For Industrial Applications
The United States Atomic Energy Commission (AEC), now the Department of Energy (DOE), established the Plowshare Program as a research and development activity to explore the technical and economic feasibility of using nuclear explosives for industrial applications. The reasoning was that the relatively inexpensive energy available from nuclear explosions could prove useful for a wide variety of peaceful purposes. The Plowshare Program began in 1958 and continued through 1975. Between December 1961 and May 1973, the United States conducted 27 Plowshare nuclear explosive tests comprising 35 individual detonations. Conceptually, industrial applications resulting from the use of nuclear explosives could be divided into two broad categories: 1) large-scale excavation and quarrying, where the energy from the explosion was used to break up and/or move rock; and 2) underground engineering, where the energy released from deeply buried nuclear explosives increased the permeability and porosity of the rock by massive breaking and fracturing. Possible excavation applications included: canals, harbors, highway and railroad cuts through mountains, open pit mining, construction of dams, and other quarry and construction-related projects. Underground nuclear explosion applications included: stimulation of natural gas production, preparation of leachable ore bodies for in situ leaching, creation of underground zones of fractured oil shale for in situ retorting, and formation of ...

Fear overcome!!! Minhaj ul Quran
Fear overcome!!! Minhaj ul Quran
This short film was made by us for Minhaj Welfare Foundation that runs an orphan care home by the name of Aghosh. Aghosh is in the process of adding more capacity and facilities so that it can cater to more number of orphans and provide them with world class facilities. I personally visited their site where construction activity was underway to accommodate 500 more orphans. Shaykh ul Islam, Dr. Tahir ul Qadri has a great vision for orphans of the ummah, but the project needs co-operation from all of us. It is a great opportunity for us to be a part of construction of an orphan care home -- a sadqa/charity that will remain always and keep benefiting us in this life and in the hereafter...
